Q:It's so hot here in summer.I hear that traditional Chinesemedicine is able to prevent or alleviate the symptoms of heat stress. Are there any simple procedures I can use?—Meissi

A:Skin-scraping therapy, body massage and Chinesemedicinal treatment are the three most common remediesfor heat stress.

Skin scraping:Use an alcohol-based antiseptic lotion.Take a one-yuan coin or the edge of a smooth spoon—a professional skin scraper is the best tool.Apply a few drops of oil to the back of the neck and spine and then get a friend or relative to scrape the skin from the base of the skull, down the neck and across the tops of the shoulders. You can try to do it yourself if you are very agile.Make sure hands are well cleaned for the procedure Repeat this process five or six times for every treatment, scraping until the skin turns red or in some cases purple.

Body massage:Use your thumb to massage the zusanli, dazhui, quchi, hegu and neiguan pressure pointS along the meridian course.Nip and prese those points from lightly to severely, then slowly massage and press the points for 3—5 minutes untilthey tingle and ache.

As points of reference, the zusanli acupoint is about three inches below the knee and one inch to the outer side of the leg shankbone. The dazhui point is below the spinous process of the seventh cervical vertebra, with the similar height of your shoulders. The quchi point is located at the lateral end of the elbow crease,mi dway between the biceps brachii tendon and the lateral epicondyle of the humerus. The hegu point is located between the thumb and forefinger on the dorsum of the hand. The neiguan point is Iocated on the inner arm, just two inches above the wrist.

Chinese medicinal treatment:Gently scrub your wrists, foot centers, flanks and chest with a handful of salt until some red pots appear on the skjn. This treatment is especially appropriate for heat exhaustion.
