A new intelligent monitoring system has been installed on 317 elevators in Jiading District in a pilot program designed to improve their safety and daily management.
The system developed by Shanghai Step Network Co Ltd is called “Internet of elevators.” It was first introduced by Jiading Quality and Technology Inspection Bureau in 2013.
One of the main functions of the system is to respond to accidents and hidden dangers quickly.
On November 13 last year, an elevator installed with the system in a neighborhood in Jiangqiao Town suddenly malfunctioned.
Even before the passengers in the elevator realized what had happened, the system had automatically told passengers not to panic. At the same time, an elevator repairman received an alarm on his cellphone.
Staff from the property management company and the elevator manufacturer were also on their way to the scene.
The trapped passengers were rescued within 30 minutes.
The system can also calculate the possibility of malfunctions based on elevator records and issue warnings in advance.
Unlike those traditional networks, the “Internet of elevators” directly collects information from the main computers of the elevators, greatly improving accuracy.
There are a total of 13,332 elevators in Jiading. If the system works well on the trial operations, it might be adopted across the district to reduce failure rates and improve safety, officials said.
